Gatlinburg Gas Stations by Night: Slammedenuff 2024 After Dark

The show runs by day. After dark, Slammedenuff Gatlinburg moves to the BP forecourts on the Parkway in Pigeon Forge: S14s, a lowrider, a 300ZX under the big wheel, and a V8 where an SR20 used to be.

Every big car show has two halves. There's the official one, with wristbands, judges and a convention hall. And there's the one that starts when the hall closes, when everybody needs fuel, a snack and somewhere bright to park. At Slammedenuff Gatlinburg, that second show happens under the green-and-white canopies of the gas stations on the Parkway.

We drove down to the Smokies for the 2024 edition. These are the photos from after dark.

Gatlinburg, sort of

First, the name. Slammedenuff Gatlinburg is one of the biggest stops on the Slammedenuff calendar, the East Coast show series built around lowered, fitted and properly finished cars. The name stuck even after the show itself moved down the road: the 2024 edition ran on 5 and 6 October 2024 at the Sevierville Convention Center. Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge and Sevierville sit along one road into the Great Smoky Mountains, and for that weekend the whole valley belongs to the cars.

The forecourt line-up

By ten o'clock every pump is a parking space. A yellow Acura RSX sits on polished multi-spoke wheels at the front of a row that runs the length of the canopy, and nobody is actually buying fuel. A white Subaru WRX STI rolls in low enough that you wince at the speed bump, and the green neon of the canopy does the rest. Nobody planned the lighting, but it's better than most studios.

The S14 with a V8

The bonnet that drew the biggest crowd belonged to a pale green Nissan 240SX, the S14 Silvia sold in America. Where the SR20 or KA24 should be sits a V8, with a big cone filter sticking out of the front and a bucket seat waiting inside. It is the American answer to the S-chassis question: why chase boost when you can just fit two more cylinders, then two more? A few spaces away, a red S14 on Georgia plates showed the other way to do it: low, clean and all about the stance.

Under the big wheel

The Parkway is a strange backdrop for a car meet: pancake houses, mini golf, souvenir shops and a giant Ferris wheel glowing purple over The Island. That wheel made the best photo of the night. A red Nissan 300ZX Z32 rolled past it on chrome wheels, window down, in no hurry at all. If you grew up with the Z32 on a bedroom poster, this is how it should look: lit up, a little dramatic and slightly out of place.

Japan, Europe and the American classics

Slammedenuff isn't a JDM show, and the forecourts prove it. A BMW M4 and a red-and-black Toyota GR Supra A90 both ran yellow daytime lights, so that every arrival looked like something out of a video game. A red Porsche 911 of the 997 generation, wearing a big rear wing, parked between a Burger King and a motel as if that's where 911s always live.

A blue Lexus SC300, the American twin of the Toyota Soarer, sat with its rear arches swallowing the tyres. A Hyundai Genesis Coupe in a chameleon wrap shifted from blue to purple as you walked around it. And then, a reminder that American custom culture got here first: a G-body Chevrolet lowrider with a candy pinstriped trunk and roof, a Unique Styles plaque in the rear window and wire wheels with whitewalls.

The last frame of the night went to a red Toyota Mark II JZX90 on gold mesh wheels, parked outside a bright yellow souvenir shop, with a front-mount intercooler showing through the bumper. A four-door from the JZX family, a whole ocean from home, glowing under a Tennessee shop sign. If you know our Tokyo Skylines story, this one will feel familiar.

The after-hours scene has a price

The gas-station nights are the best part of the weekend for a lot of people, and also the reason the show's future in the valley is in doubt. In 2025, after a night of crowds and disturbances around a Pigeon Forge service station, the City of Sevierville cancelled the second day of the show. Local police reported nearly 1,400 calls for service over the weekend.

Our 2024 nights were like the photos: people standing around, talking about wheel offsets, buying snacks. The cars were the point. If you go to a show like this, keep it that way. Park, look, talk and leave the forecourt cleaner than you found it.

Next stop: the Dragon

On the way home we took the long way, down US 129 to the Tail of the Dragon. At the bottom of it, in a car park full of motorbikes, we found one of the rarest NSXs we have ever seen: a widebody Acura NSX at the bottom of the Dragon. Until then, see how a very different scene does it in our Tommy Kaira R32 in New Jersey story.
